Basic Income

The correlation between income and health is well-known. In recent years, research that demonstrates the strength of this correlation has come to light; with each step up the income ladder, health status improves. Also in recent years, the discourse around a basic income guarantee has re-emerged with a focus on how such a model would impact population health status. Within this discourse, there are a number of different perspectives to consider and explore. We want to help!

Our objectives over these 18 months were to:
  • build understanding around the concept of basic income
  • build understanding around the various models of basic income
  • showcase how basic income models function in other jurisdictions with a focus on outcomes
  • build understanding around what basic income means for population health status
  • advocate for governments, NGOs and our communities to join us in this conversation
  • contribute to the current, national conversation around basic income
The PHA NBPEI utilized various methods to help meet these objectives, such as:
  • connecting with partners who wish to join this discussion
  • creating a repository for relevant material related to basic income on the PHA NBPEI website
  • sharing important material relevant to the conversation through our social media platforms
  • hosting a basic income 101 webinar for our members, partners and the general public
  • hosting an event where:
    • experts in this area can come together to share their knowledge on basic income
    • participants can engage in facilitated discussion around the pros and cons of basic income in NB and PEI
  • engaging with national partners to share the outcomes of this conversation

Let’s Chat! Facilitating a Conversation on Basic Income

The Public Health Association of New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island held a workshop in 2019 to facilitate a conversation on basic income and health. The workshop aimed to build understanding around the concept of basic income and its potential impact on health, to showcase how basic income models function in other jurisdictions, and to advocate for governments and NGOs to join in this conversation. The Let’s Chat Basic Income and Health Workshop was an interactive event that drew on material from the BIG experience and explored potential basic income policies in the context of NBPEI.
